 A Contemplative Book Study - Advent 2022

Turn My Mourning into Dancing:
Finding Hope in Hard Times

by Henri Nouwen (Compiled and edited by Timothy Jones)

4 Tuesdays, November 29 - December 20
10:30 AM - 12 PM

(Please plan to attend all sessions, if possible, to build community)

Henri Nouwen is a favorite author of many. Interest in his work has only gained momentum since his death in 1996, perhaps mostly because of who he was: A heart, broken before God and opened for his fellow friends and readers. This book was pulled together from scribbled notes, sermons, and lectures and published after his death by Timothy Jones, who wanted to reveal more of the man, an even more personal look.  He did the digging research with others, and spent many evenings, listening to and speaking with those living with profound disabilities, at Daybreak, where Henri spent his final years as pastor.

Ever practical, never pat, or simplistic, it gently points toward a way of life that is grounded in God’s constancy and rooted in eternal hope.  A life that can dance even in the darkest night.

We will read prayerfully, about twenty pages a week, taking notes, marking up the margins!  When we gather in our contemplative setting with some music and quiet listening, we will share what we are learning, what God is showing us.

Led by: The Rev. Catherine Powell, D. Min., Founding Servant Leader, The Anchorage, who earned degrees from the University of Florida, Erskine Theological Seminary and Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP). Her formation also includes the Spiritual Guidance Program of The Shalem Institute, the 30-day Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius as well as training at the Jesuit Center, Wernersville, PA to lead 8-day Ignatian Retreats.  She was ordained in 1999 and delights in family, friends, music, learning and nature. Her greatest sense of call is one-on-one spiritual direction both monthly and during retreats.
